2020 BACKYARD CONSERVATION WORKSHOP SERIES BEGINS IN MARCH WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO POLLINATOR GARDENS

Homeowners, gardeners, homesteaders, and others interested in conserving the natural resources of Washtenaw County are invited to attend the Backyard Conservation Workshop Series, hosted by Washtenaw County Conservation District (WCCD). This year in Spring 2020, we will present a series of information sessions and hands-on training to help residents of southeast Michigan increase wildlife habitat right in your own backyards and neighborhoods! Our workshop series kicks off on the evening of Tuesday, March 3rd with an introduction to gardening to support native pollinators. Vern Stephens of Designs by Nature LLC will introduce attendees to the wide world of pollinators and the many threats that they are now facing; then, he will review the flowers and plants that you can include in your garden, covering site selection and preparation, planting, and how to maintain your pollinator friendly plants.

As spring returns to Michigan, the Washtenaw County Conservation District will follow up our workshop on pollinator gardens with two more great opportunities to learn how to incorporate more plants into your landscape. On Wednesday, April 8th, join landscape architect Wade Lehmann for our “Tree Planting 101” workshop, so that you can learn how to plant and take care of all kinds of trees, from planter contained to bare root stock – and it’s a perfect primer for anyone buying plants at the WCCD’s tree and shrub distribution later in April! This workshop will involve hands-on planting, planned to take place at Growing Hope’s Urban Farm in downtown Ypsilanti. Then, join us in mid-May for a workshop on Naturalized Landscaping with Native Species led by Rick Meader, landscape architect for the City of Novi, where he will show you how to manage nutrients in your soil, eco-friendly approaches to pest management, how to use mulches and mowing to control unwanted plants, and how to choose the right native species for your plot. This workshop will give you the grounding you need to get the best selection for you at our Native Plant Expo in late May!

Workshops are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. The Pollinator Gardens workshop will be held at Liberty School in Saline (Board Room, 7265 N Ann Arbor St, Saline, MI 48176), from 6-8 PM. RSVP is required due to limited space. Please contact Kim Williams-Guillen at kimberly.williams-guillen@macd.org for registration information.
