ANNOUNCING: Gratitude and Addiction Recovery – A FREE public presentation by Dr. Amy R. Krentzman, MSW, PhD; Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work and at the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota and an Adjunct Research Investigator in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School.

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Experiencing gratitude helps people have more positive emotions, appreciate good experiences, deal effectively with adversity, enhance physical wellbeing, and strengthen relationships. For people in recovery from substance use disorders, gratitude is a frequent topic in recovery circles, a recurrent theme in recovery program literature, and a central component of recovery work. And the good news for anyone is, a state of gratitude can be cultivated to grow stronger with use and practice.

Who wouldn’t want these benefits? Anyone who’d like to learn how and why to start cultivating gratitude is invited to this presentation to learn more! Professor Amy Krentzman, who has conducted seminal research on gratitude, will provide definitions of gratitude proposed by social scientists, present scientific findings about the benefits of gratitude, cover theories for the ways in which gratitude “works” (in general and in recovery), ponder whether gratitude has a “downside,” and lead the audience through gratitude exercises.

Date, Times and Location: “Gratitude and Addiction Recovery” will be held from 7:30 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday May 22, 2018 in the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Education Center auditorium, 5305 Elliott Drive, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Admission is free and no registration is required.

The program is part of the free Education Series organized by Dawn Farm, a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization that provides a continuum of quality of services for people with substance use disorders.
