February events with LSNC: Superb-Owl, Grossology, Owl Do I Love thee and more!

Superb-Owl Sunday

Sunday, February 4, 2018 – 10:00am to 1:00pm

Ages: All ages (Youth must be accompanied by an adult)

$5 per person

Before the big game, come to Critter House Open Hours and then stop by for our Superb-Owl Sunday celebration! Stay for five minutes or an hour at this carnival-style event where you’ll learn how our wildlife staff prepare food for these nocturnal raptors and keep their enclosures safe and clean. Make enrichment toys for our birds to play with or dissect an owl pellet and reconstruct the skeleton inside. Have your picture taken with one of our resident owls. Leave with some ideas for making your yard or neighborhood a safer, more welcoming habitat for owls. The best part? You can do all this and still get home in time for the game! Registration is required by Wednesday, January 31st.

Critters Up Close: worms and friends

Free with Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum admission

Every month, Ann Arbor Hands On Museum visitors get up close and personal with some of our favorite critters from the natural world! Join us for hands-on activities and a meet and greet with critters from 10-4 on Saturday (with a mid-day “Animal Naptime”) and 1-4 on Sunday. This month the featured critters are worms and friends, and they are ready for their close up!

Parents’ Night Out – Animal Engineers

Saturday, February 10, 2018 – 5:00pm to 10:00pm

Ages: Youth currently enrolled in K-6th grades

$30 per child ($25 per child for LSNC Enhanced Members)

It’s a night out for grown-ups while the kids enjoy an exciting evening at LSNC. Study the incredible adaptations that help animals hunt, run, jump, and swim, and then apply those ideas to your own inventions and creations. Sketch your ideas in your design notebook and then bring your inventions to life! Parents’ Night Out includes a Panera sandwich box with PB&J or Turkey sandwich as well as a late-night popcorn snack. Families are welcome to send their child with a brown-bag dinner. Activities will be outside as much as possible, so please come dressed for the weather! This Parents’ Night Out program coincides with our “Owl Do I Love Thee” adults-only program to provide you with a convenient child care option.

Days Off Outdoors Camp: Grossology

Friday, February 16, 2018, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

$70 per child for non-members/$65 per child for members
Investigate how turkey vultures defend themselves with vomit and experiment with molds and yeasts at this fantastic one-day camp. Study scat (the scientific word for poop) and other things left behind at the other end of the food chain. Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up-close!

Days Off Outdoors Camp: DIY Planes and Glider at Yankee Air Museum

Friday, February 16, 2018, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

Held at the Yankee Air Museum: 47884 D St, Belleville, MI 48111

s80 per child, $75 for LSNC enhanced members

Explore the physics of flight in this one-day camp! Follow schematics and diagrams to build paper airplanes and gliders. Then, test the limits of your creativity when you design your own “aircraft” and see how it measures up in friendly competition. Every Unity in Learning camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and visit Yankee Air Museum exhibits. Campers need to bring a lunch. We’ll provide morning and afternoon snack.

Days Off Outdoors Camp: In Your Backyard

Monday, February 19, 2018, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

$70 per child for non-members/$65 per child for members

Nature is everywhere! We can find it in the park, at your school, and even growing in the cracks in the sidewalk! Come find out what makes Michigan’s ecosystems tick as we venture outside to find out just what lives in our own backyards. Practice finding and identifying the plants, birds, insects, and other animals that are right under your nose. Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up-close!

Days Off Outdoors Camp: Explosions! at Yankee Air Museum

Monday, February 19, 2018, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

$80 per child, $75 for LSNC enhanced members

What exactly is an explosion?! Investigate pressure and chemical reactions in this exciting one-day camp. Use the scientific method to design your own rocket show and get messy by mixing household ingredients as they pop, fizz, and bang. Every Unity in Learning camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and visit Yankee Air Museum exhibits. Campers need to bring a lunch. We’ll provide morning and afternoon snack.

Owl Do I Love Thee – Now on two nights!

Saturday, February 10, 7-9 pm, Ages 18 and older OR Wednesday, February 14, 7-9 pm
Ages 18 and older $25/couple LSNC Members, $30/non-members

Treat your special someone to an evening of romance and fun with our resident owls. Get up close and personal with these magnificent night hunters as you learn about their mating habits and rituals. Then, snuggle up on an outdoor, candle-lit poetry walk. Warm up inside with board games and art projects-or bring your own game to play-while you enjoy tasty desserts and beverages. Nothing says “I love you” like a night out in nature! Please come dressed for the weather. This event is also being offered on Wednesday, February 14th, for those interested in attending on Valentine’s Day. On Saturday, February 10, “Owl Do I Love Thee” coincides with our kids-only Parents’ Night Out program to provide you with a convenient child care option. Pre-registration is required for either.

Fireside Fun: A Good Old-fashioned Campfire Circle
Sunday, February 18 6:30 – 8 p.m. All ages. Free.
There’s nothing quite as relaxing as sitting around a campfire, sipping hot drinks, and swapping stories. We’ll kick off the 2018 Fireside Fun season with an indoor fire in LSNC’s DTE Energy House. Bring your family, friends, reuseable mugs, board games, and blankets. We’ll provide a blazing indoor campfire and plenty hot cocoa mix and tea. This event is rain or shine. Feel free to bring slippers to wear inside!

Outdoor environments are a great way to engage all of your toddler’s developing senses, and get a bit of exercise! LSNC has many opportunities for you and your little one to explore and appreciate the outdoors, such as live animal visits, hikes, stories, and hands-on activities. Each session includes indoor and outdoor activities – so make sure to dress for the weather!

Our Nature Tykes Preschool Program gives your 4-5 year old the opportunity to learn and grow independently in this 1.5 hour drop-off program. It is a great supplement to, or step towards, a full-day preschool program. Registration is by the month, and each session is designed to encourage your little one to ask questions, explore the outdoors, and develop important classroom skills as we hike in Black Pond Woods, meet live animals, make crafts, and run hands-on experiments. Activities are indoors and outdoors – so make sure to dress for the weather!

Have a 1-3 year old that is not quite old enough to join Nature Tykes? Take a look at our Nature Storytime program that also runs on Wednesday mornings.
