THE NORTHVILLE ART HOUSE PRESENTS TEXTILE GEOMETRY

THE NORTHVILLE ART HOUSE PRESENTS TEXTILE GEOMETRY

TEXTILE GEOMETRY: Compositions by Katie McGrath and Kathryn Schmidt
January 4 – 26, 2019

Circles, squares, curves and arcs, angles and triangles are the building blocks of fascinating textile construction. When you add beautiful colors and texture with stitch and embellishment, there are infinite possibilities for fabulous creations.

The Northville Art House presents TEXTILE GEOMETRY: Compositions by Katie McGrath and Kathryn Schmidt. This exhibition features textiles that emphasize the use of geometric shapes, colorful fabrics, and thread embellishments. The work is designed to appeal from a distance and draw the viewer in to enjoy the intricate details.

Katie McGrath of Brighton and Kathryn Schmidt of Tecumseh have been exploring geometric elements for more than forty years through exhibiting, learning, teaching, and writing about textiles in art. McGrath’s work features strong design and color choices. The geometry of traditional quilt blocks can be seen in a number of the pieces, while others reveal free-form, innovative designs.

“I want the work to be interesting, colorful, intriguing, delightful, fun…To engage the viewer, and to hear ‘oh look at this’ from that viewer, is a thrill!” emphasizes McGrath.

Schmidt designs her work with layers of texture. She combines color, fabric, paint, beads, and found objects to create the story. Both hand and machine stitching are used to contain and enhance these materials. Her goal is to combine commercial, hand-dyed, and surface altered textiles into unique presentations.

“Seeking individuality propelled me into the world of abstract design. I use improvisational construction techniques, which allow a never-ending vista for exploration,” expresses Schmidt.

TEXTILE GEOMETRY opens with a free public reception on Friday, January 4 from 6 – 9 p.m. The exhibition runs through January 26 during Art House hours, Tuesday-Friday 12-5 p.m. and Saturday 12-4 p.m. The Northville Art House is located at 215 W. Cady in Northville, MI, by phone 248-344-0497 and online at www.northvillearthouse.org.
